ABOUT

The military was our "family business" and my dad was a pilot—two factors that heavily influenced my interest in military aviation from a young age. Like most other American kids who grew up in the 1970's, I built scale models—kits from companies like Monogram, Revell, and Lindberg stocked by all of the discount and drug stores. For Christmas, my dad would surprise me with a few kits from "exotic" European companies like Italeri, ESCI, and Heller.

I drifted away from building models in my teen years; My interest rekindled in my early 30's and I joined IPMS Fame Cities and became active in the contest scene. I haven't been a consistent builder; I tend to work in spurts. But I've always been a consistent buyer, and I've amassed a large stash - something I'm glad I did before several recent waves of economic chaos. In addition to traditional kits of military subjects, I 3D-print and build models of dinosaurs and prehistoric life, documenting the process on my website PaleoModeler.com.

In 2018, I got interested in high-fidelity combat flight simulators. I fly DCS and IL-2 in virtual reality with a small group of friends from around the US and around the world. I share the DCS missions and skins I create here. My other interests are photography, art, and playing the guitar. I live on the Gulf of Mexico with my wife, dogs, and a parrot.

WHY SPOOK?

In the combat flight sim hobby, like any other facet of multiplayer gaming, one needs a callsign. I'm a U.S. Navy veteran who served as an intelligence specialist aboard a CVN during the Cold War and Gulf War. My focus was on Soviet and Warsaw Pact military operations and Strike Warfare Mission Planning. We were referred to as "Spooks" because we worked in the shadowy realms of CVIC and SUPPLOT—spaces that were off limits to all but a handful of the crew. It's a great callsign because it's a single syllable, it's easy to remember, and it's easy to say for my friends whose first language isn't English.

SPOOK'S WARBIRDS

I'm a scale modeler, combat flight sim pilot, and military history nerd.
